I bought the Punto from new in November 2004 and got an excellent deal, unbeatable by any other dealership. It is currently on 27000 miles after 20 months.
I had problems straight away with the famous clutch judder which I tried to ignore but it got to the stage where pulling away at junctions was very difficult and hill starts impossible. I took it to the local dealers who were excellent and very quick at replacing the clutch under warranty. Then I found the front door had cut in to the front seal, which needed replacing. On returning to the dealers they replaced the seal and adjusted the door and it hasn’t happened since. The only other problem I have had is the horn, which was replaced in ten minutes and with no paper work, great!
On the plus side though, it is great fun to drive and very efficient (averaging 49mpg combined) even when cruising at respectable motorway speeds. It is cheap to insure and tax and, as I service it my self, cheap to maintain. It is very spacious, has great head room and a comfortable driving position for me and my girlfriend (I’m 6ft 3in, she is 5ft 6in). I have found the Fiat Customer Service to be infinitely better than the Ford Service’, and I will be straight back to buy another Punto (or maybe Grand Punto…) when this car’s warranty runs out; I wouldn’t like to be paying for all of these repairs and replacements out of my own pocket.
